Winchester Powders, Primers, and Reloading Supplies
WINCHESTER 244 – 1 LB.
Like W231, I found that the small size of the flakes in W244 worked well with my RCBS Uniflow powder dispenser. WinClean is an additive added to W244 to help it burn cleaner and reduce copper fouling. Winchester’s 9mm Luger,.38 Special, and.45 ACP handloading powders are recommended due to their low flash.
Hodgdon and Winchester both list recommended loads for the W244 in 17 different handgun calibers. There are many different calibers of pistols, including the.25 Automatic Colt Pistol, the.32 S&W Long, the.32 H&R Magnum, the.327 Federal Magnum, the.380 Auto, the 9mm Luger, the.38 Super, the.38 Special (and +P), the.357 Sig, the.357 Magnum, the.40 Smith & Wesson, the.10 Auto, the.44 Special, and the.45 ACP. For this report, I fired rounds of W244 through a 9mm Luger, a.38 Special, a.357 Sig, a.40 S&W, and a.45 ACP.
My measurements of velocity were nearly identical to those reported elsewhere. With many of the cartridges I tested, W244 had some of the highest velocities of the powders listed on Hodgdon’s website, and this was done with relatively low charge weights.
It won’t be the quickest choice for magnum handgun cartridges. Powders with a lower burning rate work better for them. The W244 can nearly match the standard velocity of some popular cartridges, such as the 9mm Luger and the 45 ACP.
The accuracy was on par with that of my other firearms. W244 has real potential in shooting match handloads, as my guns were more accurate than average with most 9mm loads and all.45 ACP loads. The results from the.45 ACP cartridge particularly impressed me. When firing 10 shots, only one of the six loads tested produced a group larger than 2.0 inches.
Welcoming WinClean 244 to the Winchester family of handgun powders is an understatement. It prevents copper fouling, has a low flash point, and burns cleanly. As it uses low-mass charged particles, it is a productive and economical choice. Accuracy levels ranged from good to excellent. It’s impossible to have too many choices, and W244 looks like a strong contender for game-winning gunpowder. It can be purchased in 1, 4, and 8-pound quantities.
